BMX Fun Day for Township schools

|| LEGACY PROJECTS

It is obviously important to all role players that the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships will be staged in Pietermaritzburg and there is no doubt that the event will deliver high octane excitement, thrills and spills and many lasting memories, but it is equally important that events of this nature, linked to the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup events that are staged in the region, are a catalyst for the interest and development of the sport in the region, before and after the events have come and gone.

Real Events Management in conjunction with the City of Pietermaritzburg and BMX SA have embarked upon a Legacy Project linked to each of the events whereby permanent BMX tracks ranging from “Learn to Ride” tracks to competition venues are being and will be constructed in and around the city and in the region to encourage and facilitate children of all ages to be able to be introduced to the sport and to be able to be taken through the various stages of rider development so that more and more South Africans will be able to enjoy the sport and also to be able to ride in events like the UCI BMX World Championships in the future.

One track has already been constructed and is fully operational in Wadley Park in Edendale and ongoing development clinics and educational programmes are already taking place at this track. The track at the Golden Horse Casino has also received a facelift and is utilized by the more advanced riders. The next tracks that have been slated for construction are for Mpopomeni in Howick as well as Imbali in Pietermaritzburg.

The programme is supported by all of the BMX event sponsors as well as Pedal Power Association who generously sponsored 40 bicycles and 40 helmets to the programme.
